The signature was a forgery. Mark had found my old checks in a drawer, practiced my handwriting for weeks, and filed a paper swearing I could no longer manage my own affairs. With it, he planned to sign the house over himself and move me into that nursing home bed before the van ever arrived. He did not know the lawyer who wrote my lease watched the county records for my name. When the filing appeared last Tuesday, my lawyer called the deputy at once.

Dale had never meant to sell anything. After hearing Mark joke about locking me away, he quietly phoned my lawyer and agreed to play along. The man who bought the house eight months ago was Mr. Ortega, Harold’s old partner from the lumber yard. He paid a fair price and deeded the house to Sophie the following week, with my lease untouched. Everything was legal and stamped. Mark shouted that I had no right, and I told him calmly that a mother has every right to protect her home from her own son.

The deputy asked Mark to come to the station about the forged paper, and Rhonda was left standing in my hallway holding the empty cookie plate. Sophie handed her a printed list of every four hundred dollar withdrawal from my pension. She said the court would decide how it was repaid, and that the two of them had until the end of the week to move out of my bedroom. Rhonda did not argue. For the first time since the funeral, she did not say a word.

Mark pleaded to a lesser charge and repaid every dollar by selling his truck. Rhonda went to stay with her sister. Months later, he came to my porch alone, hat in his hands, and apologized without a single excuse. I did not slam the door, but I did not hand him a key either. Sophie moved into the sewing room by choice, and the deed still lives in the flour tin. I sleep in my own bedroom again, and the folding bed went to the church.
