A murmur rolled through the auditorium. Principal Okafor stood and walked to the stage. She said Hazel was telling the truth, and that she had only learned it that morning. Three weeks earlier, when Vanessa reported the missing bracelet, the cleaning staff were questioned, and one worker was suspended without pay. I had found the bracelet wedged under a seat during my shift. I sealed it in an envelope with a note and left it in the school secretary’s drawer, afraid nobody would believe me if I walked into the office myself. The secretary had been on medical leave, so the envelope stayed there until that morning.

The principal held up the envelope, still sealed, with my handwritten note beside it. “Found under row C, seat 14. I do not want credit, only for the others to be cleared.” Vanessa’s face went crimson. She had been the one to push for the suspension, and she had told other parents that cleaners “always look at jewelry.” Her daughter, Chloe, stood on the stage beside Hazel, staring at her mother with tears in her eyes.

Vanessa walked to the stage slowly and took the microphone from Hazel. She said she was ashamed. She apologized to the cleaning staff, to Hazel, and to me, saying she had judged a dress by its fabric instead of the hands that sewed it. Then a woman in the third row stood. She was Ms. Ferreira, the costume designer for the city youth theater, who had come to see her niece. She said Hazel’s dress was the best-made costume in the show, and she handed me her card, asking whether I would sew for their next production, paid.

I cried for the first time all night. The suspended cleaner was reinstated with back pay, which Vanessa insisted on covering herself. Chloe asked if Hazel could sit with her at the next rehearsal, and by spring they were best friends. That summer, I started sewing for the theater, and I kept a scrap of the old green shirt in my sewing box. On the drive home that night, Hazel fell asleep still wearing her crown.
