Gail sat down at the kitchen table without a word. Her hands were trembling around her coffee mug. Brett finally spoke. After his father died, Gail had borrowed against the house to cover his medical bills and her own spending. She stopped making payments in the spring. Brett had been covering what he could, but it wasn’t enough. When we married, they decided my paycheck would close the gap, without ever telling me why.

The house was in Gail’s name alone. Every bill I paid would have gone into a home I would never own, to save a loan I never signed. And when Brett learned I had a house of my own, his first thought had not been to tell me the truth. It had been to let his mother ask me to sell it. Brett admitted it without excuses. That was the part I couldn’t forgive quickly.

I moved back to Linden Street that weekend. Brett called every night for two weeks. Then he did something I didn’t expect. He helped his mother meet with a housing counselor, and together they sold the family house before the bank could take it. Gail moved into a small senior apartment near her sister, paid for with what was left after the loan. She called me once to apologize, stiffly but sincerely.

A month later, Brett knocked on my door with one suitcase and a counselor’s business card. He didn’t ask to move in. He asked if we could start over, honestly this time. We are still in counseling. Some evenings are hard. Gail visits on Sundays and always asks before she cooks. The soup is still good. But every bill in my house has both our names on it now, and every decision is made at my kitchen table, together.
