Diane stepped inside and laid out the truth on the kitchen island. Six weeks earlier, Marcus had applied for a $400,000 loan against my house. He had signed my name using copies of documents I had e-signed for the travel insurance. The man in the suit was a fraud investigator from the bank, here to verify my signature. He also explained why Marcus wanted my parents off the trip: my father read every paper put in front of him, and he would have asked questions.

I told them about the call I made the morning after the argument. I had asked Diane to move the house into a family trust, and she finished the paperwork two days earlier. Nothing could be borrowed against it without my signature, and the bank had already flagged the application. Marcus finally confessed. Sixty thousand dollars of the loan was promised to his mother for Tessa’s divorce lawyer, and ninety thousand was meant to clear a business debt he had hidden from me for two years.

Gloria had gone silent on the speaker. Then Tessa’s small voice came through, saying she had been listening beside her mother and had never known about the forged signature. She apologized to me, crying, and said she would find another way to pay her lawyer. I told Marcus I would not press charges if he signed a statement admitting the forgery, moved out that week, and agreed to a legal separation. He nodded without looking at me.

That evening I called my parents and told them everything, and Dad only said that I had done the right thing. We rebooked the trip with the travel credits, and Mom wore her new walking shoes onto the train from Seville to Madrid. Dad marked off every destination in his guidebook. The divorce was final the next spring, and I kept the house, where my parents now come for dinner every Sunday.
