Delia didn’t take the phone. Shawn told me later that she walked away and sat in the van with her mother. Piece by piece, he put it together. For months, Delia had been telling him I was tired of family, tired of noise, and ready to downsize. Her parents had already been telling friends they would be moving into a big house with a yard. Her sister admitted the room list was Delia’s idea from the start.

My house. The trip was meant to keep me out of the way while they made plans, and to show the children a Christmas that didn’t include me. Shawn loaded his kids into his SUV that evening and drove home through the snow. He walked in at midnight, apologized before he even took off his coat, sat down at my kitchen table, and cried harder than he had since his father’s funeral.

Delia and her family spent Christmas at a roadside motel. When they came back, Shawn told her the truth was out, and that the house was not for sale. They separated in February. I gave Shawn sixty days to find his own place, not as punishment, but because he was finally ready to stand on his own. He found a small rental ten minutes away. The refund went into a savings account for my grandchildren.

This Christmas, I booked a cabin myself. Smaller. Cheaper. Shawn and the kids came, and I made the room list with my own hand. Grandma’s room was at the very top. On Christmas morning, my grandson taped it to the refrigerator and drew a little star beside my name. Shawn burned the pancakes. The kids said they were the best ever. I didn’t mind. We stayed in pajamas all day. Nobody left before dawn.
