Lacey had spent her parents’ thirty thousand dollars on a luxury SUV lease, designer clothes, and a credit card she had opened in both their names. Troy had never seen the statements. Renee had them printed and highlighted. Lacey had told her parents their money bought the house, and told everyone else I was the clingy mother-in-law who kept trying to buy a place at the table. My money had been covering her tracks.

Cordelia was furious, but not at me. She turned to me in front of everyone and apologized for every cold holiday, every comment, every time she made me feel like a guest in my own family. Lacey cried and didn’t deny any of it. Warren said they would help Troy restructure the credit card debt, but only if Lacey went to financial counseling. Troy just sat there, staring at the agreement he had signed seven years ago.

When everyone else had gone, Troy stayed. He told me he had laughed on that call because Lacey always laughed, and it was easier than thinking. He said he was ashamed. He also apologized to his sister Joanne, who had been calling me for weeks to warn me. Then he asked Renee to draw up a repayment plan, two hundred dollars a month, starting in January. I agreed. The automatic transfers stayed canceled, but my door stayed open.

Troy and Lacey separated that spring, and the divorce was quiet. I still pay for Eli’s school program and Ruby’s gymnastics, directly to the school and the gym. The following Thanksgiving, Troy brought the kids to my house without being asked. Cordelia and Warren came too, carrying a pie. Joanne brought the cranberry sauce. Stanley’s chair stayed at the head. We set extra chairs at my table, and nobody had to buy a seat.
