The audit was meticulous. For six years, Dad had paid personal expenses through the company, from Brianne’s leased Audi to his lake house renovation. The $4,500 he borrowed from me two weeks earlier was to cover a hole before the year-end review. Grandpa had discovered it shortly before his death and chose to leave the decision to the one grandchild he trusted to make it fairly. Mr. Pike said he had never seen a trust so carefully protected.

That evening, I didn’t call anyone. I let them have their engagement party. On December twenty-seventh, I walked into the boardroom of Kincaid Industrial with my attorney and Mr. Pike’s documents. Dad was at the head of the table, mid-sentence, announcing that Brianne and Pierce would join the leadership team next year. Then he saw me take the chair at the other end. Brianne’s smile vanished the moment she recognized me.

The board voted within an hour. Dad was removed as chief executive and given a choice: repay every dollar within a year, or face criminal charges. He repaid it by selling the lake house and two cars. Pierce ended the engagement once he learned there was no company for him to inherit. Brianne called me crying that night. For once, I didn’t answer. Mom asked me to come for Sunday dinner. I said maybe.

I hired a professional chief executive and took the chair of the board myself. Mom apologized in March, quietly, over coffee. Dad hasn’t yet, but he finally asked me how my freelance work was going. He also paid back my $4,500, with interest. I still live in my small apartment in Milwaukee. It isn’t pathetic. Grandpa’s cedar box sits on my bookshelf, and I finally understand what he meant about quiet patience.
