Removing survey markers is a crime in our state. The deputy wrote it up on the spot. Priscilla insisted she had only “moved them for convenience,” but her contractor had a text from her ordering it done before we got home. While she argued, my crew started cutting. Jolene brought coffee out to the crew. Green concrete breaks much more easily than cured concrete, and by noon, twelve feet of her slab was rubble. Priscilla watched from her porch, silent for once.

Without those twelve feet, her planned house no longer fit. Her architect had to redesign everything, and her builder walked off the job after learning he had been used to break the law. The redesign and delays cost her far more than the twenty thousand dollars she had offered me. Martha also filed for our legal fees, the cost of the removal, and damage to my land. Martha called it the easiest case she’d had all year.

Priscilla settled three months later rather than face a jury. Her contractor had agreed to testify against her. She paid every dollar of the removal, Martha’s fees, and a penalty for the trespass. She also had to pay a licensed surveyor to reset every pin, with the county watching. She never apologized. But she stopped calling Jolene my little wife, and she stopped looking at my muddy boots like they meant something.

We used the settlement money for exactly what Priscilla had mocked. That fall, I built a paddock and a small barn on the twelve feet she tried to take, plus the acre behind it. I built the fence too, of course. That’s what I do. In November, Jolene brought home two retired quarter horses. She named them Biscuit and Rowdy herself. Every morning, they graze right along the property line. Priscilla’s new kitchen window faces them directly.
