Helen read from her notes. After the dinner, Natalie had followed Tyler outside and asked why his mother was missing. He told her I was “embarrassing,” and then admitted the truth: his father had asked him to keep me away. Gordon had told the Brandts I was unstable, and Denise had added that I had been “difficult” since the divorce. Tyler let them say it because he was afraid of losing the comfortable life they offered him.

Then Helen told me the part that frightened her. Gordon owed a large debt from a failed restaurant, and he had been pressuring Tyler to ask the Brandts for a loan once the wedding was set. The paper Tyler was supposed to sign was a promise to repay it from the wedding gift money. Natalie had read it and refused to let the wedding go forward until Tyler told her everything. Helen had called me because she could not stand knowing what her family had believed about a woman who had done nothing wrong.

I did not call Tyler that night. I called Patty, and we sat at her kitchen table until midnight. On Saturday I drove to Indianapolis in my work truck and my boots, and I knocked on the Brandts’ door. Helen hugged me before I said a word. Natalie came down the stairs with Tyler behind her, pale and silent. I told him I had never been ashamed of him, and I would not be ashamed of myself, because these hands had paid for his braces, his tuition, and his first suit.

Tyler cried and said he had been a coward. He apologized to me in front of everyone, then called Gordon and refused to sign anything. Natalie postponed the wedding by three months so they could attend counseling together. In the spring, I wired the lights in their new house for free, wearing my boots, and Tyler held the ladder. At the rehearsal dinner, he stood up and called me his amazing mom, and this time, he meant every word.
