I opened my purse and took out a small folder. I told the guests, first in their language and then in English, that I had studied for a year to give my son a toast from the heart, and that the card in their hands was not mine. Then I read my real toast aloud, word for word, including the thank-you to the grandmother. The old woman pressed her hand to her chest and began to cry.

Then I played a recording from my phone. On Tuesday night, it had caught every word at that restaurant table: the father laughing, the plan to shame me with false cards, and the debt he wanted my son to pay. His voice rang across the courtyard, saying the old woman understood nothing. Guests gasped. The brother lowered the microphone with shaking hands. The bride’s father tried to speak, but the grandmother raised one finger, and he fell silent.

My son read his own card twice, then turned to his bride. She whispered that she had known about the hotel debt, but not about the cards, and that she had been too afraid of her father to say no. My son did not shout. He told her he loved her, that a marriage could not begin on a lie, and that the transfer would never happen. Then he walked to me and took my hand.

The grandmother took the microphone last. She said the debt was her late husband’s old mistake, hidden for years by her son, and that she would sell the olive grove to pay it, so no guest would ever be shamed in her village. Her son apologized to me in front of everyone, with tears in his eyes. I gave the envelope to my son and told him to save it until the bride earned back his trust. Months later, she flew home with him, and she wrote me a letter thanking me for the toast that told the truth.
