Dad stood on my porch with snow on his shoulders and could not meet my eyes. Inside the box lay a stack of letters, each addressed to me and each unopened, years of them. “Your mother hid them,” he said. “Paige begged her to. Every time you wrote to us about an award, a milestone, or your company, Paige claimed we were choosing you over her, and your mother could not bear the fighting. So she hid your good news, and she kept her promise to Paige.”

He told me the rest in pieces. Paige had lost her job eight months ago and lied to everyone about it, and Mom had been quietly paying her rent from their retirement savings. “The groceries story was one more cover,” Dad said. “Paige did not want us seeing your home, because she could not stand knowing how well you were doing.” I opened the top letter. It was my own, from three years ago, announcing my first company award. The seal had never been broken.

Mom arrived an hour later with Paige, who stayed in the car. Mom walked into my living room, saw the stone fireplace, the beams, and the table, and sank onto the sofa crying. She apologized again and again, admitting she had chosen peace over her own daughter. I made tea and told her I was not angry anymore, only tired of waiting to be seen. Then I asked Dad to bring Paige inside. Paige finally came in, crying harder than anyone.

We talked until the tree lights were the only thing glowing. Paige admitted she was ashamed, jealous, and afraid, and I told her I would help her find a job but would not pay her rent. Mom promised to stop hiding anything. That Christmas night, all four of us ate dinner at my table, and I served the marmalade and Dad’s coffee. Paige started work at my company in February, and every year since, my parents arrive three days early.
