I drove to the city that evening with my driver’s license, my marriage certificate, and the gas station receipt I had tucked in my Bible like I did every week. The claims office verified everything in under an hour. Denise shook my hand and said she had never seen anyone so calm. Ron sat in a side room with a state investigator, staring at the floor. Lying on a claim form about a living wife turned out to be a felony.

My lawyer gave Ron a choice. He could sign an agreement giving up every claim to the prize, or I could cooperate fully with the state’s fraud case. He signed the next morning. He never even apologized. The divorce he had filed went through in the spring. He kept the truck and his fishing gear. I kept the house, paid off the mortgage, and never heard the words half of nothing again.

Then I kept my promise. Twenty-one years earlier, the first Friday I bought a ticket, I swore that if those numbers ever came up, the money would go to the people they stood for. So I set up college funds for all seven grandchildren, paid every one of my sister’s hospital bills, and planted a rose garden in my mother’s name at the church. Ron’s name was not on the list.

My children were stunned when I told them which birthdays had been on that ticket. My sister cried and said she would never complain about my driving again. I still buy one ticket every Friday at the same corner gas station, for three dollars, with the same numbers. I sign the back before I leave the counter. Every Saturday morning, I still check the numbers with my coffee. And the pineapple magnet now holds a photo of my grandchildren.
