The message was from Beverly, Tiffany’s mother, and I read it twice on the doorstep. She had seen the center’s post and her hands began to shake, because Gerald’s name was one she knew well. Two winters earlier, after she lost her job and fell behind on rent, a volunteer had driven her to the housing office and sat beside her through every form. She never learned his full name, only “the kind man with the toolbox.” Gerald had done it all quietly, and the program that kept her housed was the one my donation would now save for others.

Kevin said Beverly had phoned him at five, sobbing, demanding to know why Gerald’s widow had been left out of Christmas. Then he confessed the rest. For weeks Tiffany had pushed him to ask me for the auction money, because they had made an offer on a house. When he refused, she decided I would only make the evening awkward, so she told me her mother needed the table. Beverly knew nothing about it. She had simply agreed to cook, believing I had been invited.

A car pulled up, and Tiffany climbed out with Beverly beside her, holding a foil pan. Tiffany could barely meet my eyes. “I was wrong, Linda,” she said. “I wanted that money so badly that I stopped seeing you as family.” I unlatched the chain and let all three of them inside. I told them I forgave them, but the donation stood, because Gerald had spent eight years helping people like Beverly. I also told Kevin that love and money should never be seated at the same table.

On Christmas Day, all of us served lunch at the Maplewood center, with Beverly ladling soup beside Diane while Grace and Owen argued happily over who handed out which present. Diane read Gerald’s name aloud, and Beverly wept openly. Months later, Kevin and Tiffany bought a smaller house with their own savings, and I helped them paint the kitchen yellow. Every Christmas now, my table is full, and nobody has to wonder whether there is room for them.
