The last page held a letter from a Dr. Lowell Quinn, claiming I had “significant memory decline” and needed supervised care. I had never met him. The power of attorney would give Jason control of every account I owned, including the one hundred twenty thousand dollars left from my house. Stapled behind it was a placement form for a care facility three hours away. He planned to have me sign everything on Tuesday at a “family paperwork appointment.”

Abby whispered the rest. Jason had spent the eighty-five thousand dollars I lent him on his failing landscaping business, not the mortgage, and he never planned to repay it. For weeks he had been telling relatives I was getting forgetful. The checkup I had booked for Saturday was my own doing, because I had noticed those whispers and wanted proof I was fine. Rachel knew nothing about the forgery, Abby promised. I hugged my granddaughter and told her she had saved me. Then I called my old friend Louise, whose daughter was an attorney.

On Tuesday morning, I walked into that office with Louise’s daughter, Ms. Patel, beside me, along with my doctor’s written report from Saturday showing my memory was perfectly sharp. Jason sat waiting with a pen and a smile that vanished when he saw us. Ms. Patel laid out the forged letter, then called Dr. Quinn’s office, which confirmed he had never examined me. Rachel had come too. She read the sticky note, turned to her husband, and said quietly, “You told me she wanted this.” Jason had no answer.

Jason finally admitted everything. His business owed money, and he had panicked. Ms. Patel said I could press charges for forgery, but I chose a signed repayment plan instead, with every dollar returned within three years. Rachel took the twins to her sister’s for a month, and Jason started counseling. I rented a small apartment ten minutes away, and the grandchildren visit on my terms, because I want them to. That night, Abby hugged me and whispered, “I’m so proud you’re my grandma.”
