Two years earlier, Dean and Nora had been hit by a drunk driver while he was off duty. Nora’s spine was injured, and Dean spent months learning to walk again. Their insurance covered only the most basic wheelchair, and the medical bills kept piling up. Nora never told anyone at school how bad things were. The kids who teased her had no idea. She didn’t want pity. She only told her dad about Simon.

When she came home in her new chair and explained what a boy in her class had sold to buy it, Dean cried at the kitchen table. That night, he called his old squad. Officers Brooks and Ruiz tracked the guitar to Harmony Music on Fifth Street. Officer Ruiz drove there at closing time. When the store owner heard the story, he sold it back at exactly what he had paid, and the officers covered it themselves.

But they weren’t finished. The department had passed a donation jar around both shifts overnight. Sergeant Becker handed Simon an envelope with enough money to replace his PlayStation and refill his birthday savings, every dollar. Simon tried to refuse. Nora rolled closer and told him that if he could accept her thank-you, she could accept his wheelchair. Simon finally laughed and took it. I cried harder than anyone. Dean also set up a fund for Nora’s medical bills, and Simon asked to help run it.

Then Simon asked if he could play something. He tuned the Stratocaster right there in the lobby and played the song he had practiced for months, while twenty police officers clapped along. Now he and Nora are inseparable. Every Friday, she rolls into our kitchen after school and requests a new song. Dean waves at me from the driveway every time. And not one kid at Lakeview Middle mocks her wheelchair anymore.
