The room went silent. Philip explained everything. He had only learned the truth that afternoon from Hazel’s daughter. For three years, Tamara had told relatives I was confused and forgetful, that I embarrassed myself at gatherings, and that doctors had advised keeping me calm and away from crowds. That was why my sister Hazel stopped calling. That was why the photos never included me. Tamara had even suggested Russell seek power of attorney over the trust.

Russell turned to his wife. “You told me Aunt Hazel said that,” he said slowly. Tamara burst into tears and claimed she had only been worried. Martin calmly asked whether any doctor had ever diagnosed me with anything. I handed him my latest checkup report, completed in October. Perfect memory scores. Tamara stopped crying when she saw it. Russell sat down at the table and put his head in his hands.

I didn’t cancel the notice that night. I let it stand. In January, I sold the Santa Barbara beach house and placed the money in education accounts for every one of my grandchildren. Russell and Tamara were given the chance to buy the suburban house at a fair family price, and they did. Russell agreed to counseling, and he went alone at first. Hazel called me the day after Philip told her, crying and apologizing for believing the story.

That Christmas, I hosted dinner myself. Edith came, and Philip and his family, and Hazel drove four hours with a pie. Clarence’s chair stayed at the head of the table. Halfway through dessert, the doorbell rang. Russell stood on the porch alone, holding a poinsettia, and asked if there was still room at the table. Tamara didn’t come. There was room. I set one more plate, and for the first time in years, nobody was left out.
