Dennis took the saucer from Sophie and read the faded ink aloud. “To Marian, for the kindest year of my life. Lorraine Pruitt, 1957 wedding china.” Courtney’s mother covered her mouth with both hands. Lorraine Pruitt was Courtney’s grandmother. Sophie kept reading. Eleven years ago, when Lorraine grew ill, her relatives were always too busy to visit, so Marian drove across town three days a week to cook for her, wash her hair, and read to her until she slept.

“Before she died, Lorraine pressed the entire set into my hands,” Sophie read. “Her family had been quarreling over it, and she wanted it kept by someone who would never sell it. She made me promise to wait until the right granddaughter proved she would treat it with love. Courtney, you were told it was lost in a move, and I let you believe it. You began collecting matching pieces eight years ago, and I never had the heart to say that your grandmother’s whole set was sitting in my cedar chest.”

Sophie’s voice caught on the last page. “I carried this box to your table meaning to give it to your mother. After the paper plate, I changed my mind. Sophie, you tried to hand me your own plate without being asked, and Lorraine would have wanted this set to belong to someone that kind.” Courtney sank into her chair with tears running down her face. She said she had been so afraid of losing the set she had worked to rebuild that she had treated a juice glass like a crime. Dennis told the room he should have spoken the moment that paper plate appeared.

I told Courtney I was not angry, only tired of being the one who always paid for a broken glass. Sophie ran to the kitchen and set a china plate in front of me, and Courtney cut me the largest slice of pie. Then she carried her eight plates to the table, placed them beside the box, and asked if we could build the full set together. The next Thanksgiving, Courtney and I washed every piece by hand, side by side, and not one cup broke.
