Eleanor’s voice explained everything. Eighteen months earlier, while she was sick, she found bank notices for an eight hundred thousand dollar loan against the mansion, signed with a forged copy of her name. Trevor had lost the money gambling and in a failed restaurant. When she confronted Courtney, our daughter begged her not to tell me and said I would only make a fuss. That was when Eleanor realized Courtney had known all along.

So Eleanor quietly hired an attorney named Marcus Doyle. The mansion went into a family trust with me as sole trustee. Courtney could live there for life, but she could never sell it or borrow against it, and the forged loan was voided in writing. The cabin was the safe place Eleanor built for me, rebuilt with her own savings on land she bought quietly, along with a bank account of one point four million dollars in my name alone.

Marcus had already reached the mansion by the time the recording ended. I drove down the mountain the next morning. Trevor had confessed everything to the bank, and Courtney sat crying on the staircase. She said she thought I would never find out, and that she believed her mother left me the cabin because I was weak. I told her Eleanor chose the cabin because she knew I would need peace, and the mansion because she hoped Courtney would finally earn it.

I did not take the house away. Trevor moved out and agreed to repay what he took through a court plan. Courtney began counseling, and for the first time in years she asked what I needed. Every Sunday she drives up the mountain with groceries, and we sit by the fireplace beside Eleanor’s old armchair, which I brought up myself. Eleanor did not leave me a worthless cabin. She left me a place to heal and a daughter with a second chance.
