Dad didn’t deny it. He just said a father has to teach consequences. Mom said a father also has to keep his daughter alive. It was the first time in my life I had heard her raise her voice at him. Derek, who had never once stood up to Dad, quietly said he was ashamed he had walked past my car without knocking on the window. Mom told Dad she would be sleeping in the guest room until he found a counselor.

I didn’t wait until Friday. Shelly offered me the apartment above her bakery for less than I’d been paying Dad, and her father Lyle insisted on helping me move, wrist cast and all. Shelly’s bakery customers left a box of cinnamon rolls on my new doorstep. Mom paid off the last of the car loan from her own savings and had the title transferred into my name. “You already paid for it,” she told me. “Twice.”

Dad stepped aside from Monday’s character assembly. The principal asked a different speaker to lead it. Me. I stood in that gym in my scrubs and talked about Lyle, the ditch, the cold, and what it means to open a door for someone who needs it. Lyle came too, in his old county jacket, and the kids gave him a standing ovation. Derek sat in the front row. Mom sat beside him. Dad didn’t come.

He called me in March. He didn’t make excuses. He said he’d spent his whole life believing rules made someone good, and that he had forgotten rules were supposed to protect people. He’s been seeing that counselor every week. I forgave him slowly. Now I have Sunday dinner at the house once a month, and Derek drives me home after every one. The security chain is gone. Mom took it off the door herself.
