I turned the page, and there it was in blue ink: the witness line, signed by my mother, with a notary stamp beside it. She covered her mouth. Daniel Whitfield calmly explained that Grandma had bought the lake house in my name last spring. Tessa had then used an old power of attorney I signed years ago when I studied abroad, and she had signed the house over to a company she owned with Jared for one dollar. That company rented it to an elderly couple for forty-two hundred dollars a month.

Tessa broke down first. Jared’s business had failed, and the rent was paying off his debts. She had also opened credit cards in my name and maxed them out, which was why every landlord turned me away. Then my father admitted the rest. When Grandma’s letters about the house arrived, he had thrown them away, and he had told the hiring manager at my last interview, an old golf friend, that I was unstable. He said he thought I would only lose the house, and that the family needed it more.

I did not shout. I looked at my mother and asked why she signed. She whispered that she had believed Tessa when she said it was only paperwork to protect me. Grandma set her hand on mine. Daniel Whitfield told the room that the deed was forged, and the county would void it. He had already filed a police report that morning, and the bank would freeze the company’s accounts. The elderly couple, the Hendersons, had been told Tessa owned the house, and they were innocent.

That night Grandma drove me to the lake. Mr. and Mrs. Henderson insisted I take their guest room, and I slept in a real bed for the first time in months. By spring my credit was repaired, Tessa was repaying every dollar, and the Hendersons stayed on as my tenants and friends. My father apologized first. Next Thanksgiving, we all sat at the lake house, and Grandma carved the turkey herself.
