The envelope held four pages. The first was a notice that I was ending every payment I had made for nine years, including the mortgage, the utilities, and their medical insurance. The second was a copy of the deed. Nine years earlier, when the bank was about to foreclose, I had paid off the loan, and the title had been transferred to me in exchange for my promise to let them live there. Mom had signed without reading, sure I would never use it. The third was a sixty-day notice to sign a fair rent lease or leave.

The fourth was the seating chart, with Tiffany’s catering invoice on the back. Twenty-six seats had been found for clients and neighbors, and none for a seventeen-year-old girl. Gordon sank onto the porch step and asked how I could do this on Christmas morning. I told him that Harper had driven fifty minutes through a snowstorm and eaten half an orange for her dinner, and that he had done this on Christmas Eve. Diane insisted there had been too many people. I handed her a printed copy of the email she had sent an aunt, calling me unstable, and her hands trembled as she read it.

Then Diane told the truth, and her voice broke. Tiffany’s business was failing, and she had begged for every seat to impress clients. Diane agreed, too ashamed to admit a doctor had been paying their bills, and she told Harper there was no room so nobody would ask questions. Tiffany confessed she owed forty thousand dollars and had run everything from their garage.

I did not throw them out. I said the notice stood unless three things happened: Tiffany moved her business out, my parents apologized to Harper, and her name headed every guest list. They drove to my house that afternoon. Diane knelt beside the couch and held her granddaughter’s hands, and Harper forgave her before she finished speaking. Next Christmas, thirty chairs surrounded the table, and the first one carried her name.
