The necklace had been sold and bought back. Carolyn explained that Jenna had called her in tears the night before, admitting she had sold my clothes to buy back what Brian had pawned, before I noticed it missing. Brian had been hiding the mortgage notices for four months. He had lost money on online gambling, drained our savings, and pawned the necklace from my closet to cover the payment. Giving my wardrobe to Jenna was his way of emptying the closet so I would never find the empty pocket.

I asked him one question: how much was left. Brian covered his face and said the savings were gone and we were three payments behind. Carolyn laid a printed statement beside the envelopes. She had spent two days at the lender’s office and arranged a payment plan using her own retirement funds, on one condition. Brian would attend counseling, and every account would be moved into my name. She looked at me and said the decision was mine, and I was allowed to take my time.

I did not scream. I picked up my grandmother’s necklace and told Brian I would stay only if every promise became paperwork. Jenna arrived later that day, crying, and returned the cash from every sale along with the dusty-rose dress, which the buyer had kindly returned once she explained. I told her I forgave her, because she had told the truth before anyone forced her to.

Lila was born four weeks later, healthy and loud. Brian was in the room, steady and quiet, and he has not missed a counseling session since. We took our photos in the rose dress with Carolyn holding the baby. The payment plan will take two more years, and trust will take longer. But the closet is full again, and this time, I know exactly what is inside it.
