I opened the door and knelt on the cold porch to hug Hazel. From her coat pocket she pulled a crumpled sheet, and her small hand shook as she gave it to me. “It was in Mommy’s folder in the car,” she whispered. I read it in my doorway. It was a draft petition asking a court to make Lindsay and Derek my financial guardians, claiming I was confused and unable to manage my money, backed by a doctor Lindsay knew.

I invited them in and made tea while Lindsay stammered that it was all a misunderstanding. Derek read the page, and his face went gray. He admitted a form had come in October, and Lindsay told him it was only paperwork to help me, so he signed without reading. Hazel told us the rest. She had heard her mother say on the phone that Grandma lived alone, owned a paid-off house, and would never notice. Christmas was meant to keep me away until the filing in January.

I set down my cup and told them I was not surprised. Last spring, I had noticed odd questions about my accounts, so I paid for a full evaluation by an independent physician, who documented that I was entirely sound. My attorney, Mr. Ellison, held that report and my records, and everything sat inside a trust that no guardian could touch. “I only needed to see who you were when you believed I had nothing,” I said quietly. Lindsay began to cry.

Lindsay withdrew the petition that week, and her doctor friend lost his license after Mr. Ellison reported him. She left Derek in March. He came to my door the next morning, ashamed, and asked for nothing. We began counseling together, and I started a college fund for Hazel with her name alone on it. The following Christmas, Derek set the table himself. I thawed the lasagna from the freezer and carried it in with both hands. Hazel took the first slice and said, “Grandma, you can stay as long as you want.”
