I broke the seal and read my mother’s letter right there on the cot. She wrote that she had named my father co-trustee, but she had also added a clause requiring any withdrawal to be approved by an independent attorney, Mr. Callahan. She suspected Diane even then. If anyone ever bypassed that rule, the trust would automatically freeze, and the money would be held until I turned thirty. My father had never forged anything. He had been pressured.

My father called back an hour later, from a parking lot. Diane had told him the trust was meant for family needs and convinced him to sign. He had been too ashamed to tell me. Then I called Mr. Callahan, who confirmed the bank had never received his approval. Every withdrawal for the wedding had been flagged. The money was frozen, and the vendors at Martha’s Vineyard had been waiting two weeks for payments that would never clear.

My binder held the rest. Months earlier I had saved Diane’s texts and voicemails bragging about the plan, along with the bank’s notices. I sent everything to Mr. Callahan, who filed a complaint. The bank reversed the transfers. Vanessa’s venue canceled the contract, and she learned the truth from the manager, not from her mother. She called me, crying, and apologized, saying she never knew where the money came from.

My father moved out of the house that spring and spoke to a lawyer of his own. Vanessa held a small wedding in a backyard, and I attended in my dress uniform, because she asked me to. Diane did not come. When I turned thirty, I used part of the trust to start a scholarship in my mother’s name. I keep her letter in my wallet, folded small, right where I can feel it.
