The email came from Megan, my brother’s new wife. She had found the notarized authorization in Kyle’s briefcase, and she wrote that she could not stop shaking. Kyle had told her I declined the invitation because I was deployed. He had told me nothing at all. The date had been moved a day earlier on purpose. If I had arrived on time, the venue manager would have asked me to confirm the final balance in person, and I would have read every page before signing.

Megan met me at a diner near the base two days later, carrying the original documents and a printed text thread. The notary stamp belonged to Kyle’s old roommate, a man I had once fed at our family table, who admitted he had stamped the page at a bar without ever seeing me. My father had known everything. In the thread, he had written, “Hannah always pays in the end. Just don’t tell her until after.” I read that line three times. For the first time, I did not feel confused. I felt finished.

Lieutenant Reyes sent a formal letter to the estate with the forged signature, my leave records, and proof I was at sea on the date of the notarization. The manager who had been so kind to me in that parking lot agreed within a day to remove me from the contract. The entire balance moved to Kyle and Megan, and the forged authorization was voided.

Kyle drove to San Diego and stood on my porch for an hour before he knocked. I told him the money I gave for the wedding stayed a gift, but the twenty-seven thousand dollars was his to carry. My father took three weeks to call, and when he did, he apologized. I said I would no longer be the person who pays for silence. The next spring, I bought a new dress for Megan’s sister’s wedding, and this time the date on the invitation was the right one.
