Marcus stood at the top of the trapdoor with Danielle behind him, and for a moment nobody spoke. They had followed my phone’s location, afraid of what I might have found. I climbed up slowly with the ledger in my hands and told them to listen. Walter’s recording explained everything. Marcus had been moving money out of the family company for three years, covering gambling losses and Danielle’s spending. When Walter discovered it, he secretly signed a second will, and kept the decoy will to see what his son would do.

Danielle began to cry, saying they never meant to hurt me. I told her that people who never meant to hurt someone do not hire lawyers to take everything. In the vault, the real will was sealed and witnessed by a notary named Ms. Okonkwo. It left the home, the accounts, and the business to me, with a fair share for Marcus, but only if he repaid every dollar he had taken. The ledger listed each transfer and its date. Walter had kept copies with his own lawyer, who held a letter to open if I called.

I called that lawyer from the cabin porch. Within a week, the real will was filed and the decoy will was voided. Marcus signed a repayment agreement, and Mr. Whitlock withdrew from the case. I did not press charges, but Marcus moved out of the Bedford house, and I moved back in with a new rule that nobody would ever be pushed out of a home again.

Mateo became the foreman for the family’s construction arm, and Lucia took charge of the household. Isabel claimed the room with the best window. I kept the cabin, rebuilt, as a place for families who needed a fresh start, and on the porch, I hung a small sign that read, “The floor talks.”
