The man was Dale Pruitt, Trevor’s older brother and a Clarksville police officer. Mr. Caldwell explained that Marlene had been selling Edward’s morphine to Dale for two years, and Dale had sold it on the street. Edward had suspected for months, so he quietly moved his two million dollar trust out of Marlene’s reach. Edward and I had also hidden a camera in the living room that first night, because he wanted proof no one could dispute.

On Sunday afternoon, Trevor and Marlene walked in tanned and laughing, dragging their suitcases. I stood in the living room in my uniform, with Edward in his wheelchair beside me and Mr. Caldwell by the window. Marlene stopped cold. “What is everyone doing here?” she snapped. Trevor looked from the thermostat to my face. “Rachel, we were only gone four days. Dad was fine.” Edward met his son’s eyes and said, “Say that again, Trevor. Louder. The camera is listening.”

Mr. Caldwell played the footage on the television. It showed Marlene pouring Edward’s morphine into the sink, refilling the bottle with water, and slipping the pills into her purse. Then Trevor appeared, switched off the heat, and said, “He will last the weekend. Let’s go.” The room went silent. Marlene shouted that the video was edited, but two state troopers stepped through the front door. Mr. Caldwell had avoided Dale’s department and called the state police instead. Trevor sank onto the couch and admitted he had turned off the heat to save money.

Marlene pleaded guilty to elder neglect, theft, and drug distribution and received seven years. Trevor took two years and signed the divorce papers from his cell. Dale lost his badge and was sentenced to five years. The court ordered the cruise money repaid from their accounts, and every dollar of my inheritance returned to me. Edward moved into our guest room with hospice care, and he lived eight more months warm and comfortable. His trust funded his care and a scholarship for veterans’ families. Every Thanksgiving, I set a place for him.
