Melissa told it all in one broken breath. In July, Joyce had admired the oak table and asked where it came from, and Melissa, too embarrassed to say her widowed mother had lent it because she and Brent had spent their savings on the wedding, said they bought it themselves. By November, the lie had grown teeth. She invited exactly ten guests, the number the table seated, because an eleventh seat meant me, and I would have said whose table it was. Brent had been in Hastings selling seed and knew none of it.

Brent stepped forward, cap crushed in his fist. “I asked her where that table came from, Loretta, and she said a farm sale. I never thought to ask whose farm.” Joyce nodded, ashamed. She had insisted on hosting her relatives from Omaha because her own dining room flooded in October, and she never once wondered why a newlywed couple had a table that old. Then Thursday, over the card table, Melissa broke down and confessed everything while the turkey went cold.

I did not raise my voice. I told Melissa that a loan was never a debt of shame, and that she had been ashamed of the one thing that kept her father close. “You never had to hide anything from me, honey,” I said. “You only had to ask.” She sobbed into Brent’s coat. Then I opened the screen door and asked all three inside, because the pies were still warm and there was room.

That night Joyce sat beside Lloyd, and she ate two slices of her own pie. At Christmas, twelve of us squeezed around Ray’s table, with a card table pushed against one end for the overflow. Melissa leaned back in her chair, and it creaked. Austin crawled underneath with a pencil and added a line beneath his grandfather’s writing: “Still leans back. Still family.” Then he looked up and grinned, and the whole table laughed. Nobody there was merely tolerated, and every chair was full.
