Megan stepped forward with the envelope shaking in her hands. Two days earlier she had found loan papers hidden in Kyle’s gym bag, along with a bank statement showing a sixty thousand dollar loan secured by the cabin. She had tried to call me twice that morning, but my phone was out of reach in the car. She placed every page in the deputy’s hands. “I made copies of everything,” she said. “He did all of it.”

Kyle sputtered about a misunderstanding, then went silent when the deputy asked who notarized the deed. The stamp belonged to a woman named Ms. Pruitt, who ran a tax office in town. When the deputy phoned her, she admitted Kyle had paid her cash to stamp it with nobody present and to write a date six months back. He had copied Linda’s signature from old trust papers I once gave Megan for safekeeping. He had also copied a spare key and reprogrammed the keypad during a spring visit, pretending to check on the pipes.

Dennis finally spoke, his voice small. Kyle had told them I agreed to everything and was moving into a care home, and they had handed him twenty thousand dollars as a deposit. Carol stood beside the boxes, crying quietly. I told them I was angry at the lie, not at them, and I let them reload the truck without another word. The deputy then put handcuffs on Kyle for forgery and attempted fraud, and Megan watched without looking away.

Ms. Whitaker had the lender freeze the loan that afternoon, and the county voided the deed within a month. Kyle pleaded guilty and was ordered to repay Dennis and Carol from his wages. Megan filed for divorce and stayed with me for the winter. In summer, Dennis and Carol drove up, apologized in person, and helped me patch the porch roof. I changed the code back to Linda’s birthday, and her green raincoat and coffee mug are still exactly where she left them.
