I told the driver to pull over beside a gas station and called Ms. Ibrahim, my attorney since I opened my first shop. She asked me to read her the charge, then stayed silent for a long moment. The papers from the vestry, she explained, were not marriage registry forms. One of them transferred fifty percent of my holding company to a new corporation called Ellison Family Ventures, and the signature page carried a notary stamp from a notary who had not been in the church that day.

Julian had planned it for months. His family’s catering business owed lenders two hundred thousand dollars, and the retainer paid for the lawyer who drafted the transfer. They chose a quick church wedding so I would sign anything in a hurry. The country club charge was careless, a victory drink for a man who thought he had already won. Ms. Ibrahim copied the notary’s license number from the stamp, and by dinner she had reported the forgery to the corporate registry, which froze the transfer.

On Monday morning, I sat in her office as Julian arrived with Rosemary, both smiling, for what they believed was a signing meeting. Ms. Ibrahim placed the evidence on the table: the card statements, the forged stamp, and the retainer receipt. Rosemary’s smile cracked first. Julian insisted it was a misunderstanding, until Tessa walked in behind them, shaking, and handed over screenshots of the family group chat. In it, Rosemary had written, “Once she signs, her stores pay off everything. Keep her busy cooking.”

I filed for an annulment based on fraud, and the court granted it four months later. Julian signed a statement admitting the forgery to avoid charges, and the family repaid every dollar charged to my card, selling their lake cottage to do it. Tessa wrote me an apology that I kept. That spring, I opened a new store with only my own name on the sign, and I finally ate a hot meal sitting down, at a table I chose myself.
