I slipped out the side door, pulled the envelope from the mailbox, and tore it open under the porch light. Inside were a bank ledger, a brass key, and a letter in my father’s shaky handwriting. “Megan, your mother and Courtney have spent your money on things we never needed. I found out in March and was too ashamed to speak. I have been saving from my pension to repay you. Forgive a weak man.” The ledger listed every payment I had sent over four years, and beside each one was where it really went.

I opened the front door. Mom stood on the porch, already crying, while Courtney held her phone up like a weapon. “You cannot cancel everything,” Mom said. “We have guests coming.” Dad stood quietly behind them in his old brown coat. I held up the ledger. “Your house has been paid off for eleven years, Mom. Why did I send you rent?” Her mouth opened, but nothing came out.

The truth came out piece by piece. The rent and bills were invented, and most of the seventy-five thousand dollars had paid for Courtney’s trips, designer clothes, and a condo deposit. She had told Brandon she was a successful designer and that the car I bought was hers. Once, Lily had cheerfully announced, “That’s Mommy’s car!” That was the real reason my daughter was banned, because a six-year-old might tell the truth at the table. Then a car door closed at the curb. Brandon stood there, having heard every word.

Brandon looked at Courtney and said, “You were afraid of a little girl.” He drove away that night with his daughter and never called her again. The next morning, the car came back to me, and the payments ended for good. Dad’s key opened an account holding eighteen thousand dollars from his pension, and I let him spend it on Lily, because he needed to feel he had repaid something. Thanksgiving was at my home, with only Dad and Lily, who handed him her handmade card. Courtney later took a job and began repaying me. I answered Mom’s apology letter once, kindly, and kept my distance.
