Gavin stood at the bottom of the stairs in a rumpled linen shirt, tanned and out of breath. He had flown home that morning after finding my divorce papers and the ring, and he had traced me to the bank through the funeral home. “Marianne, whatever she told you, she was confused,” he said quickly. The manager stepped between us. I pressed pause, then turned the recorder up for the room. Dorothea’s voice continued, and Gavin went still.

She explained that eight years earlier, she had signed over her house and two rental properties to a trust, with me as the sole beneficiary. Gavin had pressured her twice to sign everything to him, and she had refused. She also left a notarized letter listing every visit he had missed, every call he had dodged, and every time I had stood in his place. “I raised my son to be a better man than this,” she said. “I could not change him, but I could protect the woman who stayed.”

Gavin tried to argue, but the manager read aloud the notarized trust documents and the date they were filed. Gavin had no legal claim to anything. In the envelope, Dorothea had also left a letter for me. She wrote that I had given her more love than her own son ever did, and that she wanted me to leave the marriage with a clear head and a full heart. She asked me to take the money and build the life I had postponed for twenty-three years.

I walked out of the bank beside the manager, leaving Gavin alone in the vault. I never answered his calls again. Three months later, I opened a small bakery in the town where I grew up, naming it after Dorothea. On the first morning, I placed her photograph by the register, and I finally cried the way I had wanted to in that hospital.
