The recording played through every speaker in the villa. It was a call from last winter. Dad had phoned me to beg for money, and when he thought we had hung up, the line stayed open. “There are no creditors,” his recorded voice told Rochelle, laughing. “Natalie always pays. Soldiers do.” Garrett turned slowly toward his father-in-law. Rochelle stopped screaming. Nobody in that dark living room said a word.

Marcus explained the rest through the speaker. In March, Dad had forged my signature on a deed transferring the villa to Rochelle, using a notary he paid in cash. But the county flagged it the moment it was filed, because I had placed a legal hold on the title the week I bought the property. The villa had never been theirs. The notice Josephine ripped from the door had also warned that entering would trigger recording, locks, and an alarm to the sheriff.

Two deputies arrived nine minutes later, and Marcus handed them the sealed folder. The notary confessed within the hour, and Dad was charged with forgery and fraud. The $160,000 I had wired over the years had never gone to creditors. It bought Rochelle’s crossover, Garrett’s fishing boat, and covered Dad’s gambling debts. Garrett, sickened, agreed to testify to keep his children out of it. Only then did I enter the code from four hundred miles away, and the shutters rose, letting the evening light in.

A judge ordered Dad to repay every dollar, and Rochelle sold the crossover to help. Josephine mailed me a letter of apology that I read once and kept. I returned the next morning, still in uniform, and walked into my villa alone. Daniel’s photograph hangs by the window now, facing the water he loved. I still serve my country, but at last I have a home that is mine, and the only key hangs on my own ring.
