The second page was short. My father, Richard Hale, ran Harbor Point Capital, the fund that had led Lucas’s first investment round six years earlier. Lucas never knew, because the money moved through a holding company, and I had asked my father never to tell him. I wanted to be loved for who I was, not for who stood behind me. Lucas had spent years believing he built everything alone, and he never once asked who had written the first check or who paid for his wedding.

Lucas stammered that it had been a joke, that he was under pressure, that I was being dramatic. Nobody in the room answered him. My father said quietly that the fund would not remove him, because the company was worth more than one man’s pride. But he would propose an independent chair and a conduct review at tomorrow’s vote, and the investors at those tables had just watched exactly why. Nina began to protest, and Diane gently put a hand on her arm.

I came down the stairs and stood in front of him. He asked if any of it had been real. I told him the truth: six years of it had been, until he decided I was a title and not a person. I set my ring beside his plate. The venue, the band, and the hotel rooms had all been refunded, and my planner had already written kind notes to every guest. There was nothing left to argue over.

Lucas kept his company, but he worked with a coach for a long time. Months later, he sent a plain letter without excuses, and I answered it once, politely, and nothing more. I sold the apartment and moved into a sunny place near the water. I stopped explaining myself to people who only listened when it suited them. Some endings are quiet, and mine was. I had finally stopped looking for reasons, and I felt light.
