I read it out loud, and my voice cracked at the end. Gordon Pruitt had written that he sold the boat to cover his wife’s medical bills, and that Dennis had told him at the handshake exactly where the money came from. Gordon had not slept well since. The letter offered a full refund of eight thousand five hundred dollars, no questions asked. The pickup rolled to a stop at the curb with an empty trailer rattling behind it, and Gordon climbed out holding a cashier’s check.

Dennis finally spoke. He said he had spent nine nights trying to understand why I never yelled, and he understood it on the fourth night, when I said I wanted him to sit across from me. On the eighth night, in the rain, he had called Gordon and begged him to take the boat back. Gordon drove all the way from Missouri to do it properly. Then Hank stepped forward with an envelope. The co-op crew had passed a hat for a new stove, and it held eleven hundred dollars. Nobody had asked them.

I looked at my husband and, for the first time in nine days, I had nothing planned. He had said he might die without owning one thing that was truly his, and I did not want that for him either. So I asked Gordon whether he had a smaller boat for sale. He did, a little aluminum one with a trailer, for nine hundred dollars. I paid it from the coffee can where I had saved my spare change for years. “Not taken away, Dennis,” I said. “Just smaller, and chosen together.”

Beverly clapped first, and the whole street joined in. Gordon hauled the green-and-silver boat away before dark, and the driveway looked strangely wide. By October the 1978 cabinets were gone, and every burner on my new stove works on any setting. Dennis fishes Saturday mornings and is home by noon, and sometimes I ride along with a thermos. The maple table is back inside where it belongs, and every night he looks at me across it the whole time.
