Garrett had planned it carefully. If a judge declared me incompetent, he would control my house, Herbert’s accounts, and every decision about my life. The forged check was meant to look like my mistake. Ashley had helped him practice my signature. What he didn’t know was that Herbert had already seen it coming. Two years before he died, he noticed Garrett asking strange questions about our finances, and he began quietly preparing.

He bought the cabin in my name alone, so it could never be part of any guardianship. He left the clues where only I would look, because he wanted me to find a home of my own before I had to fight. He trusted me to stand up when it mattered. Joanne had been preparing my defense since November. She had the bank’s handwriting analysis, Garrett’s deposit records, and a statement from my doctor confirming I was perfectly sound.

On January ninth, I walked into that courtroom in my red dress with the pearl buttons. My hands didn’t shake once. Garrett looked shocked to see Joanne beside me. The judge dismissed the petition in less than twenty minutes and referred the forged check to the district attorney. In the hallway, Garrett finally broke down. He admitted he and Ashley owed nearly ninety thousand dollars in credit card debt, and she had pushed him to do it.

Garrett accepted a plea agreement and is repaying every dollar under court supervision. Ashley left him that spring. He writes me letters now, and I read them, though I haven’t decided how much to forgive. I sold the big house and moved into the cabin in Bedford. The next Christmas, I set one place at Herbert’s old table, lit the candles, and ate pecan pie in his leather chair. It was easier for everybody.
