Caleb called next and told me everything in a rush. Vanessa had finished my note aloud: “I bought the yellow house you swore you would own someday. I hoped to hand you the keys myself. Congratulations. Daniel Brooks, Founder, Ironwood Peak Capital.” The ballroom went silent. The investors had come only because Ironwood Peak’s founder had promised to attend. The man with the cufflinks, Mr. Hale, asked her, “You uninvited the person we all came to meet?”

Trevor explained the rest when I reached him. His startup had pitched Ironwood Peak for eight months, and I had agreed to a meeting at the wedding, under my company name, so nobody could call it a family favor. That was why my RSVP was confirmed. Vanessa never knew, because I never spoke about my work and she never asked. The week before, she had deleted my name, afraid a brother who “did something with houses” would embarrass her. Mom had known and kept quiet.

Mr. Hale then asked Vanessa to explain herself, and she admitted everything in front of two hundred guests. Trevor had believed her story that I refused to come. He set down his glass, said he could not begin a marriage built on lies about her own brother, and walked out. The investors left with him, and the funding meeting ended. Mom cried in the lobby and finally admitted she had never once asked what I actually did.

I never answered Vanessa’s calls that night. I kept the house and never signed the transfer, because I had promised myself it was only for a sister who welcomed me. Months later, Trevor applied again through the normal process, and Ironwood Peak funded him on merit, though he and Vanessa had already separated. She finally sent a real apology. I answered once, and I still keep the beach house key on my ring.
