Theresa hadn’t spoken to her father in fifteen years. He had been a hard man and a heavy drinker, and when she left home at nineteen, she swore she was done. She never knew he had gotten so sick. Jace had found him by accident, through an old address on a birthday card in Theresa’s closet. When he drove out to see him, he found an old man with early dementia, a cold trailer, and an empty refrigerator.

Jace couldn’t walk away, and he couldn’t tell his mother either. So every weekend, he and Logan slept on the floor of that trailer, cooked soup, washed dishes, fixed the leaking roof, and made sure the old man took his pills. That was why Logan always came home exhausted and headed straight for the shower. They had pooled their part-time paychecks to buy his groceries. Logan’s careful pizza texts were sent from that trailer.

Tonight, he had wandered outside in the dark and fallen through the glass storm door. Logan cut his hands pulling the glass away while Jace called 911. The boys’ phones had both died during the ambulance ride. We drove to the hospital together before sunrise. Theresa stood at her father’s bedside for a long time before he opened his eyes, looked at her, and whispered her childhood nickname. Then he asked if the boys were all right.

He remembered her. Not every day after that, but that morning, he did. Theresa moved him into an assisted living home near her house the following month, and she visits him every Sunday. Logan and Jace are grounded for lying, but they still go with her. He calls them his weekend grandsons. Logan told me later he was sorry he hadn’t trusted me. I told him I was sorry I hadn’t noticed sooner.
