I called the bank’s emergency line with shaking fingers. The manager, Mrs. Okafor, answered at once. “Your husband is standing at my counter with a key and a power of attorney bearing your signature,” she said calmly. Three weeks earlier, I had told her to keep anyone who came for that box talking and call the police. Two officers were already walking through the lobby doors.

Gordon never got the box open. The key he held was a decoy I had left in my desk, where I knew he would look. The box held nothing but a note that read, “Hello, Gordon.” The real evidence, including the original footage and the accountant’s full report, sat safely with my attorney, Ms. Reyes. Gordon was arrested at the counter for forgery and attempted fraud.

That was why he looked relieved at the lake. He believed the envelope held my only copies, and burning them felt like victory. Brooke called that afternoon, sobbing. Gordon had told her the account was a family fund I had agreed to share, and she scheduled the transfer trusting him. She gave the police every message he had sent. Judith handed over her own records too, which showed Gordon had lied about the old lawsuit and pocketed part of the settlement I paid.

Six months later, the divorce was final. The catering company closed, and Gordon accepted a plea deal with restitution and probation because I asked the judge for fairness instead of revenge. I stayed in Seattle, where I had quietly bought a small bakery two years earlier as a backup plan. Brooke now writes me honest letters and works nights to repay her share. On my first Sunday as an owner, I set a long table in the bakery window, put out peach cobbler, and ate at the front, where everyone could see me, and no one called me the help.
