I did not shout. I turned the thumb latch on the deadbolt, because a lock fastened from the inside opens from the inside, and I walked past Brooke onto the porch with my phone. Daniel had learned my banking password when I had a fever and asked him to pay a bill. He used it to move my savings, then sold his brother on the plan: no money, a flight under his name, and a house far from town meant I would stay and scrub. They were not cruel by accident. They were certain.

I called my bank’s fraud line and told the agent I had never approved the transfer. She froze my account, locked the login, and flagged the $3,150 sent to Curtis. Within an hour the money was on hold, and she gave me a case number. Then I used a credit card I keep in my wallet for work trips, one Daniel had never known about, to rebook my flight home and reserve a room at the same resort he had canceled.

Before the taxi arrived, I used Daniel’s card exactly the way he told me to “handle the house.” I hired a professional cleaning crew for one afternoon, $540 in total, so the place would be spotless when they got back. I left Brooke’s notebook open on the counter with one line written under her chore list: “Your turn tomorrow.” Then I rode away with my suitcase, and nobody stopped me.

Daniel found me at the resort that evening, sunburned and furious, with Curtis behind him confessing in the lobby that the money was for the fishing rod and his boat payment. The bank reversed the transfer in full within five days. I told Daniel I would not stay married to a man who treated my work like a vacation fund, and a lawyer finalized our separation that spring. I flew home alone, changed every password, and booked my own beach week the next summer, with a hotel in my name only.
