Dad opened the folder himself. Inside were bank records, a signed affidavit, and photographs of Preston entering a downtown office with a man I did not know. “Eight months ago, I noticed strange transfers in your business accounts,” Dad said quietly. “Small ones. I traced them to a shell company Preston controlled. He had been moving your money piece by piece to fund his life with Brianna. I could not warn you before the divorce, because he would have destroyed the evidence.”

The credit application was the final piece. Preston planned to forge my signature using documents he kept from our marriage, borrow against my company, and disappear with Brianna before I noticed. That was why Dad had insisted I change every PIN at the courthouse. Each card Preston touched was tied to my accounts, so the moment he used one, the bank flagged it and called the fraud unit Dad had already contacted. Two investigators were waiting outside The Aurelian Room.

At 10:05, they walked into the Emerald Suite. Preston was shouting at the attendant, still holding my card, when an investigator set the forged application on the table. “Mr. Cole, this carries your handwriting and a stolen identity,” she said. Brianna dropped her phone, still recording, and her followers watched the handcuffs go on live. She screamed that she knew nothing, until the investigator played a voicemail of Brianna laughing about draining her ex. The gold watch slipped from her wrist and hit the floor.

Preston was charged with fraud, forgery, and identity theft, and the court froze every account in his name. The shell company’s money, more than two million dollars, returned to my business. I sold the gold watch and gave the money to a legal clinic that helps women facing financial abuse. Dad and I still have breakfast every Sunday, and he still reminds me to check my PINs. I cut up the old black card and kept a photo of his calm face from that courthouse hallway in its place.
