Gordon had known Courtney for six years. He had watched her spend Brandon’s paycheck before it arrived, and he had watched our son stay silent. So he left the penthouse to Brandon but placed the money to maintain it, nearly a million dollars, in a trust with me as the only trustee. The cabin was his last gift. Every trip he called maintenance had been to build me a home. He finished the bedroom two weeks before he died.

Eleven days later, the first fee notice arrived in San Diego. Brandon called me that night, panicked. He had not known the cost either. Courtney was shouting in the background that I had stolen his inheritance. I didn’t say a word until she stopped. Then I calmly read him his father’s letter over the phone. When I finished, the line went quiet. Then my son started crying, and for the first time since the funeral, he apologized for letting her throw me out.

I didn’t simply keep paying. Instead, I offered Brandon what Gordon would have wanted. The trust would cover six months while he sold the penthouse, and the money from the sale would be his to keep. Courtney refused to live anywhere smaller. She filed for divorce before the listing went live. The exercise bike, I heard, went back unopened. Brandon sold the penthouse, paid off his debts, and bought a modest house near his work.

I still live in the cabin. I paint every morning at the window Gordon chose for me, and the valley looks different every day. Brandon drives up most weekends now. He fixed the porch railing last month and called it maintenance, then laughed until he cried. On the last page of the notebook, Gordon wrote one more line. You were never the guest, Carol. I just needed you to know it.
