I let it ring until it stopped. Caroline explained that Robert had grown suspicious two years before he died, when Kevin pressed him to sign over power of attorney. Robert refused, then quietly hired her. He also placed the cabin and his savings in a trust that only I could control, which was why Kevin’s forged papers could never touch them. The listing agreement was worthless, but Kevin did not know that.

Caroline had already called the buyer’s agent and the police. At ten the next morning, I sat in the real estate office wearing my red dress, with Caroline on one side and a detective in plain clothes on the other. Kevin pleaded guilty to forgery, and the judge gave him probation, mandatory treatment, and full repayment to the bank. I paid his lender nothing, and he worked two jobs for a year to clear his debts. Jessica moved back to her parents’ house, and I never heard from her again. I moved into the cabin that spring and kept my red dress for holidays. Last Christmas, a knock came at the door. Kevin stood on the porch, thinner and sober, holding a pecan pie. I set the table for two.
