The taller man introduced himself as a special agent. He explained that two years earlier, Grandma had hired Hargrove, Bell, and Nguyen to trace every dollar that vanished from my mother’s trust, and the firm had delivered its findings to federal investigators in Nashville. That was the letter I had read fifty-two times. It also explained the private jet. Grandma had paid for it herself, so I would arrive safely and calmly, whatever my father did that morning.

Gordon shot to his feet and shouted that every cent had gone into the family business. Grandma nodded slowly. “Exactly,” she said. “Your three dealerships were built with Marianne’s money. You took it the year she died, and you let a seven-year-old believe her mother left her nothing.” Then Camille set her phone on the table with shaking hands. She had been recording at the airport, and the video of Gordon mocking me, along with messages he had sent that week, showed the agents exactly what he knew.

Rosalind broke first. She admitted she signed the transfers herself at Gordon’s request, and that the trustee had been paid to stay quiet. She agreed to testify in exchange for a lighter sentence and told the agents where to find a box of records hidden in their bedroom closet. Camille cried and swore she never knew, then looked at me and apologized for the airport. I told her I would think about it, and I meant it.

Gordon pleaded guilty to fraud and spent six years in prison. The dealerships were sold, and the court returned just over one million nine hundred thousand dollars to me, the rest lost to interest and legal fees. I used part of it to start a scholarship in my mother’s name, and I kept enough to buy Grandma’s house from the estate planning she insisted on. She lived to see her eighty-ninth birthday in it. Camille wrote to me every month for a year, and eventually I wrote back.
