Her father built the whole set the winter she was born. In 1979, when she was twelve, the bank took their farm, and everything they owned was sold at auction, right down to the chairs. She watched a young man in a seed cap load her family’s table onto a flatbed for ninety-five dollars. That young man was Glen. He had paid nearly everything we had for it, never knowing. She had never forgotten the table, and she had never stopped feeling ashamed.

When she walked into Melanie’s dining room in June, she recognized it instantly. She wanted one more Thanksgiving at her father’s table. But she couldn’t bring herself to tell me why, afraid I would think she wanted it back, so she asked Melanie to keep the guest list to family on Brett’s side. Melanie went along with it to keep the peace with her new mother-in-law. She had cried about it every night since Sunday.

I cut both pies and set out clean plates. Darlene sat in her old chair, the one with her initials, and ran her fingers along the carved spindles her father had shaped. Melanie sat in the chair marked Mel’s chair and leaned back, just like her daddy wrote. Caleb laughed and leaned back in his too. By the time the coffee was gone, Darlene and I had talked for three hours.

The table stays in my dining room now, where Glen refinished it. Every Thanksgiving, both families gather around it, and Lloyd brings his cranberry relish. We have to add two folding chairs now, and nobody minds. The year after, I took a pencil and wrote beneath Darlene’s seat in my own hand. Darlene’s chair. Came home 11-26. Someday it will all go to Caleb, with every name still written underneath, so nobody ever forgets who belongs at that table.
