The clause was one I had written into the margin myself, after twenty-nine years of reading print contracts. It said that if Lakeshore Manor gave a reserved space to anyone else for payment, I would receive a full refund, the cost of a replacement venue, and compensation equal to the entire event price. I read it aloud twice. Mr. Castellano stayed silent for a long moment, then admitted he had never read the contracts Brian signed in his name.

Then he told me how everything had come apart. After Chloe’s post spread, three former waiters wrote that Brian had rented the terrace to influencers for cash for months, bumping ordinary families aside and pocketing the money. Savannah Reed’s sponsor demanded answers, and she posted an apology, explaining that Brian had told her the earlier party had cancelled. Eleven bookings vanished overnight, including two weddings. I had filed no complaint and made no calls. The people Brian had wronged had simply found each other.

Mr. Castellano put Brian on the line one last time. “Mrs. Hartley, I owe you an apology,” he said hoarsely, and the smile I remembered was gone from his voice. “I called you old, and I treated your word as nothing. I was wrong.” I told him that a signature was worth more than a smile, and that a person’s age had never changed what they were owed. By that afternoon, Mr. Castellano had fired him and sent his lawyer to Brian’s office to collect the cash records.

The refund, the venue costs, and the compensation reached my account within the week. I gave the compensation to Marissa Quinn and her staff at Cedar Point Grill, who had saved my birthday, and I kept only my deposit. In the spring, Mr. Castellano invited me back. I sat on Horizon Terrace at sunset with Karen, Chloe, Beverly, and forty-two guests, a photo of Gerald beside my plate, while the lake glittered as I remembered. Savannah came too and brought the white roses. A new promise now hangs in the lobby: every reservation honored, at every age.
