The letter explained everything. My mother had saved for two years to buy that set in 1961, the year the pattern stopped being made. I planned to give it to Courtney on her wedding day. But the night before the ceremony, I overheard her tell her bridesmaids that I would break everything I touched and that she meant to keep me away from her future home. I said nothing and took the set back to my attic.

In the letter, I told her the rest. Years later, when Courtney began hunting for the pattern, I decided to surprise her at Christmas with the full set. Then came Easter. I had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease only a month earlier, which is why my hand shook, and Brian had told her. She still called me clumsy in front of everyone. Hannah, you offered me your plate today, knowing it would cost you. That is why this set is yours. Use it for people you love, never for show.

When Hannah finished, nobody moved. Courtney sat down slowly, her face drained of color, and whispered that she never knew the pattern was my mother’s. Then Brian pushed back his chair. “Mom, I should have spoken at Easter, and I should have spoken today,” he said, his voice cracking. “I am so sorry.” He took the folded paper plate from my hands and held me while his shoulders shook.

I told Courtney I accepted her apology, though trust would take time. A week later she arrived at my door with flowers and the seven plates she had hunted for five years, asking to add them to Hannah’s box. I said yes. Now Hannah serves me Sunday dinner on that china, steadying my cup with both hands. I ate every bite of that Thanksgiving meal on a paper plate, and I have never felt more seen.
