The note was short. “Claire, if you find this, Brian has probably asked you for something big. I never trusted him with money, so I saved quietly for you alone. The passbook holds sixty-two thousand dollars, and the key opens box 114 at First Harbor Bank. Be kind, but be careful.” I pressed the page to my chest and cried, because even after he was gone, Daniel was still guarding my front door.

I opened the garage door. Brian stood in the driveway, furious, while Rachel hung back with swollen eyes. “The storage manager called us,” he snapped. “You humiliated us.” I ignored him and asked one question. “Rachel, who wrote that text?” The driveway went silent. Rachel stared at her shoes and whispered, “Brian wrote it. I just pressed send.” Brian called her weak, and I saw her flinch.

The truth came out in pieces. Brian’s business had failed eight months earlier, leaving them ninety thousand dollars in debt, and he hid it from everyone. The television was bought on credit to look successful. He planned to cut me off, then return in a few weeks, apologize, and ask me to co-sign a loan against my house. The distance was only a trick to make me beg. Rachel had known about the debt, but not the plan, until Brian bragged about it in the car after the storage unit call.

I told Rachel she was welcome inside, and Brian was not. She moved into my guest room with Max two days later. At the bank, box 114 held Daniel’s insurance papers and a letter for Rachel, urging her to choose honesty over comfort. She read it in my kitchen and wept. Brian signed a repayment agreement with a lawyer, and Rachel sold the SUV to cover her share. I used a little of Daniel’s savings to fix the cracked window and the faucet. Now Max helps me in the garage every Saturday, and Daniel’s red chest sits open between us.
