The balance was $31,904.17, every rent payment I had ever made, plus interest. Dad had never spent a cent of it. Each envelope held a short note for that month, things he couldn’t say out loud. Proud of you for picking up extra shifts. Saw you glue your boots again. Hated it. Almost told you. In the letter, he explained the rent. Mom’s hospital bills had nearly ruined us when I was nine, and he never wanted me to learn about money the way he had, too late.

That was also why he’d said no to the shoes that year. There had been no money at all, and he was too ashamed to admit it to a ten-year-old. The fishing gear I resented wasn’t for him either. Gene showed me the garage closet. Two new rods hung there, one with a strip of tape on the handle that read Dad and one that read Son. Dad had been working up the courage to ask me to go fishing for three summers.

The last part of the letter explained the promise to Gene. Two years earlier, Dad’s doctor had found a serious heart problem. He told no one but his best friend. He wrote that he knew he had been a hard father and a quiet one, and that he hoped the money would buy me the start he never had. Then, at the bottom, the words I had waited seventeen years to hear. I love you, son. I always did.

I used the money for a down payment on a small house two streets from Dad’s. His work boots sit by my front door now, and I still can’t bring myself to move them. The next spring, Gene and I took those two rods out to the lake Dad loved. I caught my first fish on the one labeled Son. Gene said Dad would have pretended not to be proud. I know better now.
