The top page was a mortgage statement with Marlene’s name on it. “When Dad died six years ago, you told me the bank was taking your house,” Nathan said calmly. “I covered your payments that same week, and I have never missed one.” The room murmured. Nathan tore open the envelope and held up a cashier’s check. “This was my wedding gift to you. Sixty-two thousand dollars, enough to pay off the entire balance tonight, and I planned to announce it with a toast.”

Marlene rushed forward, tears finally spilling. “Nathan, you can’t take that away from your own mother.” “I am not taking away the house,” he answered. “I am taking back the gift, because a person who humiliates a child at my wedding does not get a toast from me.” He turned toward Lily. “Four years ago, Lily could not pick up a coin. Tonight she was told she has no place in this family. She has every place in mine.” Then he looked at me. “I am sorry I did not stop her sooner.”

Marlene sank into a chair and admitted the truth. After her husband died, she was terrified of being left alone, and she believed that if Nathan had a family of his own, she would become a guest in his life. She had tried to push Lily and me away before the wedding, and the wine was her last desperate attempt. Nathan had told her months earlier that he would never choose between them, and she had not believed him. Now she looked at Lily with red eyes and said she was sorry, and this time she did not look away.

Nathan did not hand over the check that night. He kept paying the mortgage, but he told Marlene the gift would wait until she earned Lily’s trust. Lily forgave her slowly. A month later, Lily covered the stain with hand-stitched flowers, and Marlene was the one who sewed on the last pearl button. Every Sunday afterward, she sat at our table as family.
